Problem/Motivation

Trying to set up a class with private forums as stated in the module documentation:

Classes of a school website is a typical usecase of the Group module.

With a teacher as the administrator, students as the members and the content as the learning material. Articles in the Group are created by the teacher and only visible to the students in the Group. Forums created in the Group are safe places to discuss the class as they are only accessible to the teacher and the students.

The content (nodes) are private but the forums and post topics are visible to anonymous users. This should also be private as described in the documentation.

Steps to reproduce

1. Create group type for the class, and add a group
2. Add group content plugins for "group node (articles)" and "group node (forum topic)"
3. Add a forum at /admin/structure/forum
4. Configure groups permissions to allow only group members to add, edit, or view forum topic content entities.
5. Add some posts to the group forum
6. Visit the forum page as an anonymous user. The forum and the list of topics are visible, though when you click the topic is shows "You are not authorized to access this page."

Proposed resolution

Forums and post topics should be private as the documentation says. Is there a setting to make it happen?

Hey, I am on a same situation right now.
Do you have any solution to it ?

  • Sorry, no. Still an issue with Groups 2.2.2.

Group Forum module was I think supposed to help with it, but it doesn't have a release compatible with Groups 2.x or 3.x. There is a fork in the issues queue that you can try, that works with Groups 2.x, but with that installed, I am still able to see the forums and topic lists as an anonymous viewer.
