Looks like this was resolved in February 2022 in the related issue #2695051: Implement node access permissions. → , and should be closed as outdated.
How can I debug this? I upgraded from version 1.4 to 1.5, and now all nodes with the special promoted to front page custom pub, give the user a 403 Access Denied, and even give non-super-admins a 403 so they cannot edit the node.
