This seems to be a configuration issue of the file field of your media entity.
The error message in the screenshot really means the file could not be transferred - maybe also check you PHP settings.
When trying to uploade a file in combined media, the message "This extension is not allowed" is displayed and prevent from uploading.
I'm currently used drupal 9.
