Looking for an easy way to copy group permissions

The group permissions template is a nice module and works perfectly for a simple use case.
For other more complex uses cases e.g. having conditional permissions overrides (e.g. based on current user), permissions that depends on external resources, and multi-dimensional factors, etc..., it will be hard to achieve with group permissions template.
