I hear that the Entity Reference Hierarchy module → is an alternative to the Book module → .
I think it would be a great addition to the Sitemap module, and good strategy for the Sitemap module to add support for, but I have no experience working with it, my clients aren't planning to use it anytime soon, and I'm not sure I have the volunteer time right now, so contributions would definitely be welcome!
