Get ready for the first Drupal 9 compatible release

We have just committed the minimum fixes to get this module over the finish line for Drupal 9 compatibility. The code of this module doesn't look too nice, so eventually we should find some funding for cleaning up the code base. But for now we should probably focus on testing the existing code base with Drupal 9. If we get a couple of RTBCs on this issue, I could make a 8.x-3.1 release available.
