The option auto-create non-existing taxonomy terms doesn't work with Select2.
Configure auto-create non-existing taxonomy terms at your taxonomy reference. Choose Select2 at Form display. Add a non-existing term and frontend, try to save node (which doesn't work).

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
I am using this in D10 and have the select2 library installed, and select2's JS is working.. but I can't create new terms via the widget; it just shows "No results found" and hitting or entering commas does nothing. Maybe I'm missing something?
