Apparently, this particular error is no longer an issue in recent PHP versions:
https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=80738

Note: in #3322750: Some plugins do not implement submitConfigurationForm() correctly - Add UI tests → empty lines were removed from the word list, effectively fixing this issue on older PHP versions.

However, it would still be useful to make the word list field required, so doing just that in this issue.
