I know tests are still needed but just wanted confirm patch in #9 applied fine to latest version 8.x-1.0-rc3 and works great for me.
There isn't an easy way to remove a facet term once selected. The URL for an active facet still contains that facet term as a filter. An active facet term's URL should be the query with that term removed as if it was toggled.

The change is currently missing an automated test that fails when run with the original code, and succeeds when the bug has been fixed.
