Issue Etiquette: Giving self issue credit for setting closed issues to "Fixed" and changing metadata

Problem/Motivation

I've just became aware of other practices that seems to be used to game the issue credit system.

In the issue queues where he is a maintainer, this person changes the status of old issues that are closed for some reason (often several years ago) to "Fixed" and then gives credit to himself for "Fixing" it. That's it. He's basically hijacking an issue he has never previously participated in, or worked on, and he does not contribute anything except changing its status to "Fixed" and giving himself issue credit.

When I asked him to explain why he did it, he refused to answer on grounds that I was "asking in a rude tone", and referred me to the CoC. He does not in any way acknowledge that his action was gaming the system. When I asked him about why not, he responded:

I am not gaming anything, since I didn't create a fake issue to give credit to myself

Since he refuses to acknowledge that this is wrong, he probably will keep doing it. To stop it, I believe we need guidelines that explicitly says that this is not a legitimate way to be give oneself an issue credit.

Some people also makes lot of very trivial changes to issue metadata, such as correcting a spelling mistake or changing the category from "Support request" to "Task". If that person is a project maintainer, he then adds himself to the list of people to be credited. I am not opposed to people fixing spelling or making sure that issue metadata is correct. But when this is done extensively and to me, it appears that it is done in order to give self issue credit, I think its amounts to abuse of the issue credit system.

Proposed resolution

I propose to add another recital to the "Attribution and credit system" section in our page about Issue Etiquette β†’ .

This is the text I propose to add as recital 5:

  • Be careful when giving issue credit to yourself. Do not abuse our credit system by giving yourself credit for fixing an issue when your engagement with the issue did not provide any real or substantial help towards resolving the issue.

The page is editable, so I can just go ahead and it, but I would like to see some discussion and hopefully get some consensus before adding it.
