This one is dead, however for me it is no longer needed. This powerfull module can replace this functionality : ECA →It takes some time to learn how to work with, but it is basiclly replacement for rules or business rules you may know. But with ECA you can do a lot more and can reproduce this module in a couple of minutes.
Find this library and I believe you will be able to achieve with this guides what you need :Add Role or Demo : Demo and they have also Video trainings >ECA videos

ECA is powerfull module can replace this functionality of select_role module, and many drupal module other.
