Cannot update database: MISSING UPDATES FOR: RESPONSIVE IMAGE

Problem/Motivation

After installation of this module in Drupal 9.0.2, running /update.php shows

MISSING UPDATES FOR: RESPONSIVE IMAGE
The installed version of the Responsive Image module is too old to update. Update to a version prior to 9.0.0 first (missing updates: responsive_image_post_update_recreate_dependencies).

The status report page shows

ENTITY/FIELD DEFINITIONS
Mismatched entity and/or field definitions
The following changes were detected in the entity type and field definitions.
Responsive image style
The Responsive image style entity type needs to be installed.
