I think this module should in any view mode, and use the settings set inside that view mode.
It's not obvious that people need to turn on 'Full Content' in the 'CUSTOM DISPLAY SETTINGS' of the default view mode, and then go to the 'Full' view mode tab, and set up the image field display settings in the 'Full' view mode. And then those are the settings that are used across all view modes.
And in any view mode other than 'Full', this module either does not work at all, or it borrows the settings from the 'Full' view mode.
This is where it only looks at the ''full'' node view mode settings, and ignores other view modes.

I spent hours trying to get this module to work with my custom view mode. And finally had to set up the 'Full' view mode, borrow the settings from there. And then hide the 'Full' view mode stuff with I didn't want on the front end with CSS.

This ticket is listed as , but is it actually resolved? If I'm not mistaken, it looks like Guy's patch was incorporated into the 8.x-1.7 release.
