As a user creating a new piece of content, the menu is often the last thing they configure. The user could have spent a lot of time setting up the content of the node and when configuring the menu position, they could easily click on the menu items in the list, resulting in a loss of all changes to the node.
Suggestion: Open menu items in a new window.
