In the past I have been using the "Select Other" webform element and it has been meeting my needs perfectly, but recently I've had to switch to use the entity reference element to select a taxonomy term. For this list I have an "Other" option is necessary and from what I've seen the only way to have that is to create a taxonomy term called Other and use a -99 weight to keep it at the bottom. Having a webform element "Entity Select Other" would be much better and keeping the "Other" option managed in webform as opposed to being an entity.

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
This would be helpful in my application too, but instead of a taxonomy list, I am simply referencing a content type "Company".
The user could choose one of the listed companies, which would simply record the value as text, but if the user wanted to add a different one, they would select "other" and that would be recorded - not as a new company content type but simply as free text.
