The option to purge old emails is now available in the 3.0.x branch.

Currently, every email entity is saved to the database. For sites with high volumes of emails this is going to grow their database really quickly. There should be an option to purge old email entities on a per template basis. The Message module already has such a system, so one option would be just to port that over to work on email entities.
