Allow customisation of XML Export Element Wrappers

In Drupal 7.x I was able to add a field, customize the label, then that would be used as the wrapper in the XML export. In Drupal 8.x, the labels are ignored, instead the wrappers are adjusted under FORMAT->Fields->Settings, then enter desired wrapper as an Alias. This seems less flexible, as the Alias field does not accept special characters.

In my case, I'm trying to create a wrapper element like <g:id></g:id>

Is there any known work arounds for this?
