Select or other taxonomy widget doesn't display terms in hierarchy

When referencing a taxonomy with parent/child terms in a hierarchy, the core select list widget displays child terms with a hyphen prefix. When you change the widget to select or other, the hyphen prefixes no longer display and there is no way to differentiate a child from a parent.
