You need to enable the processor within the search API index settings (in addition to the steps described on the module page), otherwise it's easy to draw the conclusion that this module doesn't work
Could the module page instructions be updated and/or add a README file?

Yes, just had this realization when looking at the code that this is a processor and probably needs to be enabled.
