It seems there is no views plugin for the social_media_links_field. If you add that field to a view, it does not output anything. Not a problem when you display the entire entity in a display mode, but if you want to add individual fields it returns correctly in the view (check hook_views_post_execute), but as there is no display plugin it does not display/render.
At least that's my guess.
For now I solved it by adding a pseudo field in a custom module which returns the render array of the field_item_list of that field, and pass the configuration option (in my case orientation horizontal).
