Wrong kind of data in barcode field can break the site. For example if you enter text into EAN13 barcode field, which works for integers of length 12. The problem is that a user who is creating the content might not even know what formatter is set for the field (and what kind of data he should enter).
There is also a possibility to choose different barcode types for different view modes and problems could arise from that too.
I think that selecting a barcode type should be moved out of formatter and that some validation of the barcode field is done.
