Breadcrumb based on an alternative field

In my content I have a field that I use as a 'short title' for views that are used as side menus.

It would be very useful to be able to use a content field as an 'alternative title' for breadcrumbs. If that field did not exist for that type of content or if it were empty, the original title could be used to build the breadcrumb.

I know I could use aliases, but I think it would be useful for more people to use a breadcrumb based on an alternative field.
