No background image in views

I am trying to get this to work for a view block.

I have a simple content type with two fields, and image and a link (image field display set to "background image"). What I need is for each link to have a different background image. My view is generating a block which displays an unformatted list of fields (all of this type for now).

I can get the background image working in node-view of my content-type (a single type)(css selector :".example"). But when I view the content type via the view-generated block, there is no background image. No css selector is assigned anywhere to that block (search page code for ".example", not found).

You say in the description that this works with views: how? Could I be doing something wrong?
