I was just looking through this and wanted to note that with Drupal 8 having reached EOL, this patch should no longer have to do a version check.
We've ported batch_example here: #2102643: Port batch_example module to Drupal 8 →
It turns out the Batch API will very likely change here: #2401797: Introduce a batch builder class to make the batch API easier to use →
