Usage of Commerce customer profiles in the checkout process is hard coded to the soul of this module however, there are other possible alternatives on the market, like

I think this hard coded dependency can be easily removed because this module only uses address fields from customer profiles therefore only a configurable address field reference should be passed to the related functions.
