Field settings screen: "Custom" fields missing when using Internet Explorer

When using Internet Explorer, the "Custom add another item button" and "Custom remove button" fields are missing from the "Field settings" screen, even though "Allowed number of values" is set to "Unlimited." When looking at the same screen using Firefox and Chrome, those fields are visible; but they never appear when using Internet Explorer.
