This issue has been inactive for 7+ years and has multiple people suggesting this should live in contrib (Which is already does via http://drupal.org/project/menu_attributes).
I really wish that when you create or modify a menu item using the Menu manager, that it was possible to assign a class to that item that would appear in the anchor tag.
