I have encountered this issue as well on the most current versions of Menu Block and Display Suite.
The advance options are not present when I insert the block via a block field using display suite. Likewise, the functionality does not work either and the block uses D8 core functionality. Not sure if this is a "bug" or by design. I tested that the functionality works when the block is utilized via the place block functionality via the blocks administration interface. Are there thoughts/plans on how to get the functionality extended to display suites block insertion methodology.
