This is a very useful module, congratulations!
I would like to suggest adding an optional limit for how many groups a user is allowed to create.
The limit could be set in the group type, per user role per group type.
The default limit could be set to 0 (unlimited).
For example, each user having the role Student should be able to create only 1 group of type Books.
This could also prevent users spamming the site by creating a huge number of groups.

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
I don't see enough people wanting this to add a UI for this, i.e.: I'm afraid this will add bloat. If it helps, you could easily achieve this using a custom access check on the route for the group add form or (poor UX) by adding a constraint on the Group entity type.
