I want to allow anonymous users to see a simplified comparison of the content revisions, and give them a "Split fields / Strip tags" view of the differences, without confusing them by giving them the possibility of changing the Layout and Filter. Is it possible to do this, or could one choose the default somewhere in the configuration?

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
Re-rolled the patch against current 8.x-1.x.
The original patch seemed to incorrectly remove the "visual_inline" layout. Tried to fix that.
You can disable layout plugins via the module settings page. Disabling all but 1 will not allow users to change to any other layout plugin.
