Decide which URL should appear in the URL bar

Hello,

I am going a bit crazy with trying to override the URL that shows up in the URL address bar in the browser.

Scenario:

- I have pathauto installed and I have set a specific URL path for the content type
- I can untick "Generate automatic URL alias" and I can create a new URL redirect "/whatiwant" which will sit into the URL redirect tab - sweet
- Now I can access that node with "/whatiwant"

Problem is, the URL in the bar, will always be the pathauto settings, in this case "taxonomy/node-title"

I never had this request before, but this particular client wants to be able to decide which URL should be seen in the URL bar.

Any suggestion on how to archive this?
