Override search api connection settings on an environment basis

I want to be able to override search api settings per environment via settings.php file e.g enabling and disabling a server or index.
Something like what search_api_solr_overrides for drupal 7 module does.

Is there a cleaner approach provided by the search_api module?

    I would also like a way to override config. When using backup and migrate and excluding all search tables, config is still copied. I guess this lives in the shared config table.

    Not sure if there is a way to skip the search api config if using a solution like backup_migrate?

    This does appear similar to other modules where the config persists in shared config table. e.g. rules
