This way the module works on Drupal 10 and 11 means that this error no longer can happen.
I get the message "The page you are editing could not be locked automatically. Please lock the page to make sure other people cannot accidentally overwrite your changes." At one point I was not receiving this message, now I am, on every node type. Clicking the link does result in the standard success message, but that defeats the purpose of the auto-lock.
