It sounds like this was fixed at some point. If anyone notices the same problem in the 2.x branch, then feel free to reopen the issue and update the version.
For the three types of message there are classes of the form:
messages--status
messages--warning
messages--error
These classes control the image applied to the messages and when missing misrepresent the styles.
