Popup window instead of redirect

What are the issues associated with having a popup window that loads the OIDC provider login page similar to how the Hybridauth module does? Could something like this be implemented in the openid_connect module?

I would like to write some source code to allow for such a feature but I need to know the likely first steps I should take to begin creating this feature.
