Drupal 7 end-of-life triage:
Drupal 7 will reach end of life on January 5th.The 7.x branches of S3FS do not have any additional planned releases.
The concerns raised in this issue do not appear to exist in Drupal 8+.
When enabling the s3 module to completely take over the public:// stream wrapper. All images that are used in modules and themes break.
Example:
http://{s3_url}/modules/shortcut/shortcut.png
That URL is broken, and returns a 403 forbidden (which is essentially a 404 because it's not in the bucket, it's the wrong path).
The correct path should be
http://{drupal.site}/modules/shortcut/shortcut.png
