I...honestly don't remember anymore...I'll close it out as outdated for now.
When a node that is assigned via "Display Conditions" is unpublished, it blocks any published nodes from showing as a header image for unprivileged users.
Example:
Node "Amazing Header Image" is published, and set to display at "news" path.
Node "Grumpy old Drupal developer image" is unpublished, and set to display at "news" path.
An administrator, or a user who has permissions to view unpublished nodes, sees "Grumpy old Drupal developer image", with class "node-unpublished".
An anonymous user, or a user who does not have permissions to see unpublished nodes, sees nothing--the block is not rendered at all.
