update.php never terminates

I have just run a module update process, using the built-in update process (.../admin/reports/updates/update), including the update from CCK version 7.x-2.0-dev to 7.x-3.0-alpha3, and three others which I can't now remember exactly.

The update process downloaded the modules Ok, and then did the update step which I presume is copying the code into the modules directory. However when I came to run update.php it stuck in the "discovering updates" phase. It never got as far as the progress bar showing how many updates were being processed. I reran the update.php on a restored backup of the database, and got the same result.

There are no messages relating to the update in the log.

I take it that this is not a correct behaviour.

Is there any way I can tell if updates have been applied, or if there are any outstanding? What can I do to ensure that the next time I do an update it will run correctly?

With thanks,
Tony
