How to get displays and panes revisioned ?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but I can't get a copy of displays and panes when creating a new revision.
I intended to fix the problem as done in https://drupal.org/node/1871552, but https://drupal.org/node/1871552#comment-6865824 says it's wrong.
So how to do it? I did not find any way to create a new revision and apply a display update in the same request.

To reproduce:
- Create a panelized node with an additional custom content pane with text = "test 1".
- Edit the node, check "Create a new revision", save.
- Change the custom content pane text to "test 2", save.
- Display previous revision: custom text is "test 2": should be "test 1".
