No fields required, skipping registration

So, this may be a case of misunderstanding what is supposed to happen.

I put added a product into the cart and clicked on checkout. The docs imply that I should get a registration page/page. I do get the page but the message is "Registration Information. No information required. You may skip this page."

In the registration type, I had created a field called "Badge Names", a text field. My goal is to have the user type in the name to be printed on the badge. That field doesn't show up. I changed it to a required field but that didn't change anything.

So, is this a bug or do I misunderstand how the registration fields are supposed to be applied? If the latter, what should I attempt to do to get a Badge Name for each ticket/product ordered.
