Manage Display settings for Multiple Values wrongly applied to Single Values

I have an Event Node Type containing a Date field which may contain a single date (start or start and end values), or a Repeated Date giving multiple values, typically weekly repeats in my case.

When setting the display options for this field in the Manage Display page, under "Multiple Values" I set "show 8 values" and "starting from now", since I don't need to give the history of past repetitions.

HOWEVER these conditions are also applied to date fields containing a single, non-repeated, value. The result is that when displaying a single event in the past there is no date display at all, which is not what is wanted.

(Thinking about it, if I had a Repeated date whose last repetition was also in the past I would get the same effect, which is undesirable, but I suspect in practice less of a problem and probably more difficult to fix.)
