I accidentally commented this old issue. I am setting the version back.
On a new installation of drupal 7.14, as soon as I clicked on 'Appearance' to begin customising the site, this message popped up:
"There was a problem checking available updates for Drupal. See the available updates page for more information and to install your missing updates."
When I clicked on the 'available updates' link, it told me that everything was up to date.
The next time I clicked on 'Appearance", this message popped up:
"No update information available. Run cron or check manually."
Running cron does not make it go away, it's still there every time I refresh the page.
I tried looking for this problem on the forums and found a patch on this post (http://drupal.org/node/647964).
I tried applying 2 of the patches (at the end of the post) but the command line kept on telling me that it could not find the files to patch.
So that did not work. I cannot find any other posts to help.
Can anybody suggest anything else that might work?

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
