I'm not able to reproduce this problem on a fresh install with the lates 7.1-1.x-dev theme. From the image, I suspect that the content you were trying to place into the left sidebar was too wide for the space available, causing it to "spill" over the edge of the page. I would recommend moving the blocks you have on the right to the left, and the left blocks to the right, to see if it is still happening.
Because this issue is so old I'm assuming you have probably moved on entirely from this issue, so I'm going to close it.
